El régimen consiste en un aporte diario de entre 35 y 50 gramos de fibra, es decir, más de la cantidad recomendada por los nutricionistas (30 - 35 gramos) y todavía más de lo que se ingiere habitualmente (15 - 20 gramos). La fibra se obtiene aumentando considerablemente el consumo de alimentos como frutas, verduras, fruto secos y cereales y pan completos y mediante suplementos. Paralelamente deben reducirse las calorías presentes en los azúcares y las grasas.

Este régimen permite adelgazar deprisa debido a que un porcentaje de las calorías de cada comida no se asimila. Otra ventaja es que resulta fácil de seguir porque las fibras sacian enseguida.

Críticas

A pesar de ser presentado como un régimen diferente a todos los demás, el de la fibra sigue siendo un régimen hipocalórico que preconiza la restricción en grasas y en azúcares simples. Además, impone el consumo de suplementos en fibras, que no todo el mundo aprecia.

La gran desventaja es que el aparato digestivo no siempre tolera bien el aumento de fibras. Por eso, para evitar las molestias intestinales como la hinchazón, los gases o los dolores de tripa, es indispensable proceder de manera progresiva (aunque no sea el comienzo clásico en una dieta adelgazante).

Esta dieta no deben seguirla nunca las personas que tengan divertículos o problemas intestinales.
